Beyond the Surface
I spent July 2018 and 2019 circumnavigating Greenland in a helicopter.
This journey included flying from Iceland to Greenland in a helicopter.
In a 4.5 hour flight over the Denmark Sea.
To prepare for this journey I had to get certified in a HUET (helicopter underwater escape training) class that I took with oil rig workers.
And I had to wear a survival suit, just in case…something happened.
To fly over the sea for almost the same amount of time it takes to fly across the USA was exhilarating.
And zen-like.
For we flew with only water below us and sky above us.
When we approached Kulusuk, I experienced a symphony.
Massive icebergs were front and center.
Then sculpted mountains soared straight into heaven.
Then the landscape…and ice sheet….glaciers…all created a sensory experience unlike anything I had ever felt before.
It was like a symphony…being played by the most talented orchestra in the universe.
It was song and beauty, surprises and revelations unfolding…moment by moment….day by day.
Greenland is everything and more than I hoped it to be.
Or could have ever imagined.
So I hope that these images. These moments of Greenland. Of our home. Move you. Stay with you.
And are worthy. Of your time and energy to protect and preserve.
